In 1970, David and Barbara Green took out a $ 600 loan to start making miniature photo frames from home. Two years later, the budding company opened a 300-square-foot store in Oklahoma City and Hobby Lobby was born. Today, with more than 850 stores, Hobby Lobby is the largest arts and crafts retailer in the world, with more than 37,500 employees and operating in forty-six states.
Hobby Lobby is primarily an arts and crafts store, but it also includes hobbies, picture frames, jewelry, fabrics, wedding and floral items, cards and party supplies, baskets, clothing items, home accents and items for parties.
The corporate headquarters includes more than 10 million square feet of manufacturing, distribution and an office complex in Oklahoma City.
Affiliated companies include Hemispheres, which carry unique furniture and home furnishings from around the world, and Mardel Christian and Education Supply, which offer books, Bibles, gifts, materials for church and education, as well as a curriculum of Homeschooling. Hobby Lobby also has offices in Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Yiwu, China.
